Food of Gujarat has been one of the reasons for which Gujarat is known to different people across the globe. But there are some food dishes you should surely know when you are a complete foodie. Down with this write up you come across some delicious and amazing dishes of Gujarat.

Ahmedabad – Dal Vada

Dal vada are golden crispy food item from outside and  very soft, spongy and fluffy food from inside. Also this dish is easy to make at home and requires only some ingredients .This snack is best enjoyed during the rainy season with sliced onions sprinkled with salt and fried green chilies on the side and of-course a nice hot cup of  ginger-phudina tea.

Ahmedabad – Ganthiya

This deep fried Indian snack is made from chickpea flour. This dish is often served with pappaya chatni and fried green chilies. The sweet version of this is known as Mitha Ganthiya whereas the plain version can be also be flavored using red chilli powder. A famous tea time snack for Gujaratis, Ganthiya has a yellowish texture and are not so crunchy but soft and puffy snack. It can be found throughout Ahmedabad at various street stalls but some places leave their names due to the taste and services they offer.

Mandvi/Bhuj (Kutch) – Dabeli

This dish originates from Kutch or Kachchh region of Gujarat where it is also known as Pakwan. It is said to be created by a person known as Keshavji Gabha Chudasama, a resident of Mandvi, Kutch. His shop still stands there in Mandvi and  is now carried forward by his present generations. Popularly also known by these names Kutchi burger or Desi burger and Kutchi double roti or “Kacchi Dabeli”. Dabeli in Gujarati language means “pressed”.The main ingredients of this mouth watering dish are  boiled potatoes, spices, pav (bread bun), pomegranate, peanuts, tamarind and sev. Many a times this sweet and tangy bread item is served with chutney. The Dabeli masala which is one of the key ingredients of this dish, is completely ready available in most of the cities all across India which is sold under various brand names but is made and packed in Kutch itself. Dabeli which is an instant preparatory dish and tastes great has become one of the favorite fast foods in India.

Bardoli – Suka Patra

Patras are boiled rolls  made from colocasia leaves stuffed with a mixture of rice flour and other flavourings such as various spices, jaggery, and tamarind. The taste balance of sweet and spicy can be taken as per your choice. In Bardoli, patras are fried to make it crisp and crunchy and are called Suka patra. Hot milk tea and suka patra makes a good combination. This delicacy is also sometimes served with a phudina chutney which is prepared at home.

Baroda – Muthiya

Made from gram flour, fenugreek, salt, turmeric and chili powder is  this dish from Baroda. Basically they are dumplings of gram flour. The preparing methods for this dish can either be frying or steaming. Mustard seeds and the curry leaves are two other ingredients that add up to the taste of this dish. The dish gets its name from the ‘gripping’ action performed by the hand while making them. Many variations can be added to this dish which include calabash(dudhi), fenugreek(methi), Spinach(paalak) etc.

Surat – Locho

This farsan is very famously also known as Surti Locho. It is made from a base of Gram Flour. Unlike the dish Khaman, Locho is not served in a regular shaped pieces whereas it is often seasoned with cheese, oil, onion, butter, sev, spices, coriander etc. Locho rolls has also become a famous dish among the population . However, this dish can be consumed in different flavors like mint, garlic, schezwan etc.

Valsad – Umbadiyu

A seasonal food dish is this winter special delicacy from Valsad. Umbadiyu is a mixed vegetable dish whose ingredients are very similar to that of the sabji Undhiyu but has a completely different taste. The main ingredients comprise mainly of the vegetables that are available through the  South Gujarat coastline, including the Surat, Navsari and Valsad regions in winter season. The ingredients are taken which are already mixed in spices  and for preparation the dish is cooked upside down in a traditional manner underground in handmade earthen pots, termed as “matlu”, which are then fired from above. This spicy dish is served with a chutney which is also a athanva for a glass of chilled buttermilk. It is worth trying this dish..

Jamnagar – Dry fruit Kachori

Dry fruit Kachori is a  crunchy, deep fried crispy ball of maida flour which is stuffed with a mix of gram flour and various other spices including dry fruits and coconut shavings. Unlike the normal kachoris  prepared, this can be stored for longer time i.e few weeks to a couple of months and thus you can enjoy its delicious taste anytime. However, starting up the your mornings with some ‘jalebi-fafda and papaya sambharo’ nashta and ending the day with the ‘Heera – Moti icecream’ from Ram dairy just seems like a perfect ‘Jamnagiri’ lifestyle.

Mahudi – Sukhdi

Sukhdi is a sweet made from wheat flour and jaggery mixed in ghee. It is all called as gor papdi where gor means jaggery and papdi refers to the preparation method and the shape in which it is cut. This dish can be garnished with dry fruits, mustrad seeds etc as per one’s choice. This sweet is also prepared at times of auspicious occasions. Sukhdi given as prashad at Mahudi Jain Temple, Mahudi (around 65 km from Ahmedabad) is very popular. Not only in Mahudi but sukhdi is a dish prepared mostly in every Gujarati household.

Rajkot – Green (Lili) Chatni

Renowned by its name itself as “Rajkot’s green chutney/ Rajkot ni chutney” is one of the refreshing Indian condiments that almmost goes with everything served with it. The chutney dip is prepared with mint,green chilies and coriander and can be savoured with your favourite snack, sandwiches or chaat.

Surat – Ghari

Also well known as  Surati Ghari is a sweet from Surat, Gujarat, India. This dish is prepared from batter, milk which is commonly referred to as ‘mawa’, ghee and sugar. Mainly this sweet dish is made into round shapes with sweet filling, to be consumed during the auspicious ocassion of Chandani Padva festival.It is also available in many varieties and flavours such as almond-elachi, mixed dry fruit, plain ghee, pistachio and mawa.

Salted peanuts are peanuts which are deep fried in heated oil and then sprinkled salt on. Eaten directly or mixed with phudina chutney is this Gujarati favorite mouth munchies.

Porbandar – Khajali

Khajali is a specialty of Porbandar.  In fact more than hundreds of snack makers of  main Porbandar proudly boast that it has remained restricted to Porbandar because of its atmosphere which suits the making of Khajali there. Khajali is made of finely thrasghed and grinded wheat flour. Unlike other snacks which are fried in oil, this is fried in pure Ghee. Khajali is an all season snack best suited with lemons or hot cup of tea.
