Handicraft Culture of Gujarat – the excellence of art

Handicraft – the word itself speaks its meaning “design of hands”. Handicraft culture plays a vital role in screening the traditions of a country. The art of handicraft is a unique treasure for a country as it represents the culture and tradition of the country. It also promotes the heritage of the country. India is very rich with its handicraft culture and each state of India has unique handicraft styles. “Dhokra” is India’s oldest hand craft which is metal casting. Over 4000 years, India is using this technique.

 

There are three basic elements of handicraft: Design, Material and Technique. After combining all of these elements, handcrafters with the blend of unique ideas and works produce handicraft materials and products. Handicraft work preserves the art and talent of the country. There are various types of handicraft works. For instance, embroidery and knitting, tie and dying, printing, jewellery making, lace making, etc. These entire works are world famous. In this article, we will share information regarding Gujarat’s handicraft culture.

Gujarat’s handicraft:

Gujarat is well known for its hand craft work. From various small regions and villages of Gujarat handicraft, this work gets exports. Since many years, women in Gujarat are developing different and unique hand craft designs. The blend of hand work with the fusion is giving a contemporary element in it. There are various handicraft works. They are:

Tie & Dyeing work.

The tie and dyeing work is one of the most ancient works. This work of Gujarat has a demand all over the world. BANDHANI (tie and dyeing of fabric) is well known for its designs and patterns. Jamnagar, Bhuj, and Mandvi are the places famous for its bandhani work. The combination of contrast colours makes the work look more beautiful. Once the material is done, an elegant piece of work comes out.

Needlework:

Needlework of Gujarat is famous for its accuracy and elegance. When in old time, men struggle with farming and agriculture, wives use needle work and generate second income nurture the family. Torans are one of the finest examples of needlework. People use toran to decorate their doorways. They hang toran in their doorways which gives a beautiful look to the main door of the house.

Bead work:

It is again a unique work originates in Gujarat. Beadwork basically comes from Khambhat and Saurashtra. The finest bead work comes from “THE KATHIS” (tribals). Beadwork is a combination of different motis and designs with different techniques, in beads together.

Patola:

The Patola of patan is a world famous craft of saree. There are designs made in both sides of saree. This designs are made using many colours and geometrical designs and patters made on the fabric. The very interesting fact of this fact is that, the whole saree comes out of a single ring.

Zari work:

The city of Surat, Gujarat is the oldest that works in the field of zari. The belongings of this work can be traced to mughal period. Ghanecha and Panetar (wedding dresses) are the best where zari work is seen. Basically, false gold and silver threads are used to weave zari design in the fabric. This works gives an shinning effect in the final output.

Hence, Gujarat has got various hand craft works. This works shows that the traditional and cultural values of Gujarat are of antic nature. This entire works helps to place the state in place it in the books of handcrafts. We as a citizen must protect and promote these works to make sure that our heritage and talents stays secure.
