Why is Gandhinagar the greenest capital city of Asia?

Today we will talk about Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat. Gandhinagar has been accorded as the greenest capital city in Asia with more than 50% of its total area covered in trees.

Who doesn’t love to breathe fresh air? Who doesn’t love to revive eyes tried of watching concrete jungles? Our lives are becoming more and more toxic each and every day. And the use of technology is becoming more of a need than a choice for most of us, it’s inevitable. And hence, we are searching for ways to keep it all balanced. One such city, named after Mahatma Gandhi, has taken a prominent and significant step towards a balanced environment.

Now let us see a few reasons why Gandhinagar has been granted with this status:

Reasons why Gandhinagar is the greenest capital city of Asia:

Ideal city planning

The planning of Gandhinagar is influenced by Le Corbusier, the French-Swiss architect, who has also planned major buildings in Gujarat and other cities of India. Moreover, he has also planned Chandigarh, another green city of India. Gandhinagar is planned in an extremely impressive and sensible way. Most of the buildings on either side of the road are hidden by trees. And you won’t find a building just set up oddly on road, unlike other cities in Gujarat. All the areas in Gandhinagar are isolated into various sectors. These sectors have commercial buildings and markets as well as proper areas dedicated to residential buildings.

Plenty of large and small public gardens

You will find plenty of gardens on each and every corner of the city. Sarita Udhyan is a very popular garden here. Moreover, there is also a botanical garden in Infocity, Gandhinagar. Other than that, Swarnim park, Dinosaur and Fossil park, and Punit Van are famous. However, you will find such small and big gardens in almost all sectors.

Awareness for cleanliness

Almost all the public places like gardens and roads are very clean compared to other cities in Gujarat. It seems like this city has just been developed yesterday! A city can only take a step towards cleanliness when it has the support of its people. I must say that the people living in Gandhinagar are aware of cleanliness and we as visitors must also respect this.

Traffic and road sense among people

The roads are wide and beautiful. Although you may get lost if you’re new and don’t use GPS 😛 There are lots of roundabouts or traffic circles in the city. But what’s fascinating is that you will find no or minimal amount of traffic in here. And if there is a traffic jam, nobody really keeps on honking. Most of the people are very rational when it comes to traffic. People are very patient and calm. And you have to stay too. These people actually make driving fun rather than monotonous and you know what I’m talking about if are from a crowded city like Surat.

Clean, green and beautiful. Only 3 words come to my mind whenever I talk about this wonderful city. We may or may not be living in this city, but it our ethical duty to maintain it just like it is being maintained by its people. And not just Gandhinagar but each and every place in this world. Because as a visitor or tourist to any place, our behavior towards their public assets is a reflection of ourselves. So let’s be the best tourists as well as the best hosts.

PS: Best place to have pani puri or golgappas in Gandhinagar is Vaishnav Pani Puri (in Sector 23)Make sure you eat their pani puri and masala puri. They have around 5 flavors of pani. The quality is excellent! 😉
