Tarnetar no Melo: World famous fair in Gujarat

Tarnetar no melo is a very famous fair organized once in a year. Fair is basically a gathering of people for entertainment and commercial activities. The fairground is an area for hundreds of people including activities of selling, purchasing and rides. “THE TARNETAR NO MELO” is held in Tarnetar village near Surendranagar city of Gujarat state in India.

In tarnetar village, there is a lord shiva temple named the Trinetreshwar Temple. Trinetreshwar temple is a parihar style temple. The temple belongs from the Solanki era and was built by Mihir Bhoj in 8th century. The temple is very well known for its annual fair which is Tarnetar no melo. The fair is held for days during Bhadervo Sud- 4th, 5th and 6th (according the hindu calendar). As per the Gregorian calendar the fair takes place during the months of August-September. Tarnetar no melo is the annunal fair by Trinetreshwar temple and is a very famous fair. This fair attracts many villagers as well as tourists in it. Around 50,000 people attend the fair every year.

Tarnetar fair theme

Let me give you a small glimpse about the facts of tarnetar no melo. Based on the chapter of Draupadi’s Swayamvar from Mahabharata, this fair is a celebration of Gujarati tradition, culture, folk dance, costumes art and ethnical value. Mata Draupadi was appeared from the land of tarnetar. The prime motto of villagers is young man and women are brought in the mela to find their marriage partners. Even if they don’t put keen effort in finding partners, but the atmosphere of fair is very romantic and full of exiting things. Every year the fair grows its popularity comparing to the last year. Peoples come from far villages and tourists visit the fair from different parts of India and also from foreign countries.

How to reach there?

The fair is at a distance of 8 km from Thangadh town of Surendranagar Distrct, Gujarat. Surendranagar is the nearest district from the fair.  Other than Surendranagar district, Chotila is 25 km away from Thangadh, Jamnagar is 162 km away, Ahmedabad is 196 km or Porbandar is 252 km away all this places are by road connected with the fair. There are tents and cottages facility available in the nearby of mela. These tents and cottages provide a thrilling experience of staying there to the visitors.

This is one of the most famous fair of Saurashtra region.  The prominent castes that are seen in the fair are Rabaris, Kolis, Bharwards, Khants, Kathis, Charans, the Harijans and the Dalits. With the growing reputation and increase in the proportion of visitors the fair has reached to immense height. Visitors come from rest of India and people from different parts of the world are seen in this fair.
